The Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI) was well represented at HIC 2016 in Melbourne, Australia, 25 to 27 July 2016. The primary theme of the 2016 conference was Digital Health Innovation for Consumer s, Clinicians, Connectivity and Community.

Showcasing our research

The Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) exhibited and showcased 15 years of achievements. CHI is the largest and longest running academic research group in digital health and is led by Professor Enrico Coiera. Research leaders, Associate Professor Farah Magrabi, Dr Guy Tsafnat, Dr Annie Lau, Dr Blanca Gallego-Luxan and Dr Adam Dunn also attended. Professor Coiera participated on the HISA Q&A Panel which explored the way the health workforce needs to evolve to be ready for digital health, and the support that consumers will need to be digital ready.

Researchers from the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research (CHSSR) presented a number of papers at the conference. Professor Andrew Georgiou presented: Integrating the radiology information system with computerised provider order entry: The impact on repeat medical imaging investigations. He also presented a paper submitted by Dr Ling Li, which was nominated for the Branko Cesnik Best Academic/Scientific Award: Healthdirect’s after-hours GP helpline - a survey of patient satisfaction with the service and compliance with advice. Professor Georgiou was also Co-Chair, Academic/Scientific Program, HIC 2016 Strategic Advisory Committee.

Associate Professor Meredith Makeham presented: Risks to patient safety in the residential aged care facility setting: Preliminary findings of the General Practice and Residential Aged Care Concordance of Medications (GRACE-Med) study.

Dr Mirela Prgomet presented: Little things matter: A time and motion study of pharmacists’ activities in a paediatric hospital.

Early career researcher, Ms Rebecca Lake presented: Capturing accurate and useful information on medication related telenursing triage calls.

Other attendees from AIHI were Professor Johanna Westbrook, DirectorCentre for Health Systems and Safety Research and a Board Member of the newly formed Australian Digital Health Agency.

Don Walker Award Winner

We are very proud to announce that the Don Walker Award for Effectiveness was awarded to Associate Professor Meredith Makeham, Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research. This award recognises her work in preventing unnecessary hospital admissions, avoiding medical errors, improving health outcome, and reducing waiting times.Johanna Westbrook accepting

Joan Edgecumbe Award Winner

We are also very proud to announce that Ruth Kaplan, a Master’s student with the Centre for Health Informatics, won the Joan Edgecumbe award and a continuing Professional Development Scholarship 2016.
