AIHI awarded NHMRC Partnership Centre in Health System Sustainability

The NHMRC has awarded a $5 million Partnership Centre in Health System Sustainability to Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite, Director of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), with Professor Enrico Coiera and Professor Johanna Westbrook. The Centre is jointly governed and funded to the value of $10.75 million over five years by NHMRC, Bupa Health Foundation, NSW Health, Telstra and the University of Notre Dame Australia. The Health System Sustainability Centre will support the implementation of research-informed improvements in health care system performance.

“This grant brings together researchers, policymakers, managers, clinicians and patients in a concerted effort to improve the way we deliver care to our citizens. It is one of the most important challenges we face in the 21st century. An effective and efficient health system is the hallmark of a caring, functioning society,” said Professor Braithwaite.

Professor Braithwaite leads a research investigator team to explore the issues impacting health care system sustainability and develop and evaluate a set of implementable interventions that are appropriate from a clinical, patient and economic perspective.

The investigator team includes investigators from:

• Sydney Local Health District
• Monash Partners
• Consumers Health Forum of Australia
• Independent Hospital Pricing Authority

The Partnership Centre is comprised of organisations from the Australian public, private and non-government sectors and is based at Macquarie University, Sydney.
