Abstract
Directed at early and mid-career researchers, ‘Understanding the policy environment and how to make research accessible to policy makers – an insider’s perspective’ will introduce researchers to some of the key aspects of the health policy environment and the policy process at the Commonwealth level. It will also discuss key differences in the way researchers and policy makers think, work and operate and outline some of the ways researchers can go about making their work more accessible to policy makers.

Speaker profile
Kerri Kellett is the Health Policy Research Liaison Officer and Director of the Research Liaison and Knowledge Exchange Section in the Health Systems Policy Division at the Commonwealth Department of Health.
Kerri’s key functions are to support the development of evidence based policy in the work done by the Department generally and, more specifically, in the Health Systems Policy Division, by building and facilitating stronger linkages between policy makers and researchers.
After studying politics and economics, Kerri started her career working in the political environment as a policy adviser and then subsequently moved into the Australian public service. After joining the public service, she worked in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Department of Industry, Science and Technology before moving to the Department of Health in 2006. From 2011-12, Kerri also spent a year at the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency working as the Executive Officer of the newly established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia.
Kerri has a strong interest in health policy and recognises the important role research has to play in informing evidence based policy making. She is strongly committed to continuing to work towards creating stronger linkages between researchers and policy makers.
