AIHI Consumer Symposium 2017

Consumers from around Australia met on 17^th March, 2017 with researchers from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation to discuss next-generation health systems research. In an exciting development, the Institute is forging its new research proposals to take research on the Australian Health System, and its international health systems research, into the future.

The three centres of the Institute, the Centre for Health Informatics (CHI), the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research (CHSSR) and the Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science (CHRIS) each made presentations on research for the future. Expert consumers drawn from around the country, particularly those associated with the Consumers Health Forum of Australia and Health Consumers NSW, discussed and critiqued the research proposed.

It is highly beneficial to incorporate a consumer voice and a patient perspective in health systems research. Participants at the Symposium believe this is the way of the future.

Out of these discussions new directions for researchers in the Institute were forged. Key areas for next-round research include preventing patient harm from new applications of digital technology; consumer contributions to safe and high-quality test result management; and productive safety in the Emergency Department.
