Professor Stefan Trueck

Stefan is director of the Transforming Energy Markets Research Centre, an ARC Future Fellow and professor of business analytics. His research interests focus on risk management, financial econometrics and business analytics. He is a world leading expert in the area of electricity markets and energy finance. 

His research interests include commodity markets, credit risk, systemic risk, emissions trading, climate change economics and international financial markets.

    Rohan is a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics and conducts research to support empirical policy formulation for a range of energy policies. This research aims to promote more equitable and cost-effective energy policies for households.

    • energy consumption.

      Sean is a professor of applied finance, and has a background in how markets function, and how structures and regulations impact the behaviour of participants. 

      His research interests include understanding the functioning of energy markets, identifying manipulation by participants within the market, and examining how renewable energy sources and their storage translate into measurable changes in the price of energy.

        Tina is a professor of energy and resources law. She was previously a director at the Centre for Energy and Natural Resources Innovation and Transformation (CENRIT) at Macquarie University, and at the Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law (AUCEL).

        Much of her research is multidisciplinary in nature, and includes working with engineers, geologists and political scientists.

          Yijiao is an associate professor in the School of Engineering. She is currently the chair of Macquarie University (MQ) Women in Engineering, co-director of MQ-Jilin University Joint Research Centre for Green Catalysis, and chief investigator of ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub (ITRH) and MQ Sustainable Energy Research Centre.

            Vito is head of the Department of Applied Finance. His research centres on securities market design, FinTech, asset selection criteria, quantitative investment research and residential property price dynamics. 

            He is currently working on issues related to cryptocurrency, high frequency traders, market transparency, institutional execution costs and property marketing strategies.

              Vladimir is a chemical engineer with expertise in environmental science and environmental engineering. His work is focusing on renewable and sustainable energy production technologies, and designing solutions for a sustainable future.

              • energy system solutions.

                Energy market regulation and acceptability

                Madeline is co-director of the regulation and social acceptability stream of TEM. Madeline specialises in the intersection of socio-legal aspects of the energy transition. Her research focuses on embedding energy justice law and policymaking in response to the urgent need to reach net-zero energy systems while ensuring wider community-level sustained benefits.

                • planning and commercial law aspects of

                  Constantinos Yiallourides

                  Constantinos is a lecturer in international law at the Macquarie Law School and deputy director of the Centre for Environmental Law at Macquarie University. He specialises in ocean governance, marine energy and environmental law, and ocean decarbonisation. 

                  He has provided expert advice and training to governments, international organisations and other entities on a broad set of issues in international law.

                    Associate Professor Rouzbeh Abbassi
                    Rouzbeh is an associate professor and director of research in the School of Engineering. Before joining Macquarie University, he was an environmental, safety and risk engineering lecturer and senior lecturer at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) at the University of Tasmania. He was the discipline leader for the Civil Engineering Program.
                      Professor Shawkat Alam

                      Professor Shawkat Alam is a Professor of International and Environmental Law at Macquarie Law School. Specialising in international law, he focuses on environmental law, trade, sustainable development, and human rights.

                      His research focuses on the opportunities and challenges faced by developing economies to achieve sustainable development by examining legal, institutional and policy frameworks.

                        Professor Darren Bagnall

                        Darren Bagnall is a professor in electrical and electronic engineering, a director of Macquarie Sustainable Energy Research Centre, and an independent non-executive director at Bell Resources. He was dean of engineering from August 2017 to July 2022. 

                        His research interests include: 

                        • the development of opto-electronic semiconductor devices and systems 
                        • the integration and uptake of renewable energy systems.

                          Associate Professor Binh Bui

                          Binh is an associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance. Her research interests include the interface between strategy and management control systems, climate change and emission trading, risk management, and accounting education. 

                          Her projects examine carbon accounting and assurance, climate risk disclosures, and the role played by accounting in meeting climate change challenges.

                            Andrea Chareunsy
                            Andrea is a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics with research interests in inequality and sustainable development, in specific areas relating to renewable energy transition, environmental resource management (in natural capital and biodiversity) and the diffusion and adoption of sustainable technologies, such as household solar panel uptake.
                              Associate Professor Peter Davies

                              Peter is an associate professor of environmental planning and policy in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Peter undertakes interdisciplinary research, bridging the theoretical and scholarly focus of academic inquiry with a problem orientation to support sustainability outcomes for society. 

                              Prior to his academic career, he worked in state and local government and consultancy where he held senior roles within the water, environmental protection and management, and energy areas.

                                Sara is a senior lecturer in the School of Engineering. She also serves as the associate director of Smart Green Cities (SGC) and is vice chair of IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) NSW Section.

                                  Dr Catherine Gascoigne
                                  Dr Catherine Gascoigne is a Macquarie Research Fellow at Macquarie Law School, which is a 100% research role. Her research is primarily concerned with International Economic Law, with a particular focus on International Trade Law and International Investment Law as well as their synergies with International Environmental Law and International Energy Law.

                                    Lin is a research fellow in the Centre for Risk Analytics. She has a broad range of research interests around electricity markets, renewable and sustainable energy, financial risk management, market microstructure, financial econometrics, and data science and business analytics areas. 

                                    She also has years of consultancy and analytics experience in energy, financial markets and the banking industry.

                                      Nazmul currently holds the position of director of education within the School of Engineering.

                                        Hamed is a senior lecturer in the Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics. His research interests are energy markets including data analytics (with a focus on big data and social analytics) and data-driven decision making.
                                          Professor Zhuo Jin
                                          Zhuo is a professor of actuarial studies in the Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics. He is an associate in the Society of Actuaries (ASA). His research interests include optimal control in actuarial science, mathematical finance, numerical methods in stochastic systems, and machine learning. His research has been funded by Hong Kong RGC and other funding bodies.

                                            Nino is a senior lecturer in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Her research expertise is based on broad experience in the development of statistical methodologies applicable to industrial and interdisciplinary research problems.

                                            Nino's current research interests include the impact of environmental factors on carbon allowance pricing in EU ETS, risk modelling in energy and fixed income markets.
                                              Professor Andrew Lepone
                                              Andrew is a professor of accounting and finance in the Department of Applied Finance, and chief research officer of the RoZetta Institute. His research interests include capital markets and trading behaviour.
                                                Associate Professor George Milunovich
                                                George is associate professor in the Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics. His research work is in the areas of analytics, forecasting and econometrics with a focus on financial and real estate markets.
                                                  Fatemeh (Marjan) Nazifi

                                                  Marjan is a lecturer and the course director of the Bachelor of Economics program in the Department of Economics. Her primary fields of research are energy and environmental economics. 

                                                  Marjan completed a second PhD at Macquarie University on the linkages between carbon emissions and energy markets. She has published in high impact international journals, including Energy Economics and Energy Policy.

                                                    Associate Professor Fatemeh Salehi

                                                    Fatemeh is academic lead, sustainability, in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. She is currently a chief investigator at Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre and SmartCrete Cooperative Research Centre, and the deputy director of Macquarie Sustainable Energy Research Centre.

                                                    Her expertise is in the development of physical models for computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations of turbulent flows to advance new energy technologies for clean renewable fuels such as hydrogen and biomass.
                                                      Professor Hanlin Shang

                                                      Hanlin is a professor in the Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics. He develops methods for modelling a time series of random functions in a graphical representation of curves, images, or shapes and tests these methods in applications to actuarial science, demography, and empirical finance.

                                                        Professor Pavel Shevchenko

                                                        Pavel is a professor in the Department of Actuarial Studies and Business Analytics. He has worked in the area of financial risk, leading research and industry commercial projects on:

                                                        • modelling of operational and credit risks
                                                        • longevity and mortality
                                                        • retirement products
                                                        • option pricing
                                                        • insurance
                                                        • modelling commodities and foreign exchange; and the development of relevant numerical methods and software.
                                                          Associate Professor Georgy Sofronov

                                                          Georgy is associate professor in statistics in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. His research interests include:

                                                            Associate Professor Benjamin Spies-Butcher

                                                            Ben is associate professor in the School of Social Sciences. His research explores financing models for social policy and the interaction between social and ecological protection, focusing on how private and public finance are combined. 

                                                            Drawing on lessons from social policy, he has published on social attitudes to climate policy and the political and distributive implications of different climate policy approaches.

                                                              Chi is a senior lecturer in actuarial studies and business analytics. His main research interests are investment analysis, risk quantification and optimal risk management. 

                                                              His work delves deeply into climate-related hazards, including but not limited to bushfires, floods and erosion risks. His findings provide essential insights for effective risk management strategies in a changing environment.

                                                                Yuming is a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Engineering, specializing in electrochemical carbon conversion. He earned his PhD from the University of Queensland before joining Macquarie University. His research focuses on advancing sustainable technologies for carbon management.
