Advancing sustainable energy solutions

The Transforming Energy Markets Research Centre hosted a delegation from the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), one of China's leading electricity generation companies.

The visit on 9-10 September 2024 involved a two-day training course on recent developments in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) for its executives.

The course included a series of specialised lectures that were facilitated by TEM experts, including Dr. Lin Han, Dr. Marjan Nazifi and Professor Stefan Trueck. Sessions included an in-depth overview of energy and electricity markets, followed by detailed discussions on the structure of the NEM, including the roles of AEMO, the AEMC, and the AER. Further areas that were covered included trading rules, marginal price setting, and the impact of renewable droughts on the NEM, offering the delegation a comprehensive understanding of these critical topics.

The second day continued with a focus on storage solutions, batteries, and ancillary markets, a Q&A session on the role of the Australian Energy Market Operator, and the impact of carbon pricing on Australian electricity prices. The event concluded with Professor Trueck leading a session on future development and trends in the NEM.

Throughout the visit the delegation from SPIC gained valuable knowledge from expert members of TEM, reinforcing the importance of international cooperation in addressing global energy challenges and advancing sustainable energy solutions.
