I was awarded my PhD in Psychology from The Australian National University in December 2010. I am a psychologist, member of the Australian Psychological Society, and academic member of the Australian College of Organisational Psychologists. Following my PhD, I was employed as a full-time project manager within the Directorate of Strategic and Operational Mental Health, the Commonwealth Department of Defence.  Since my appointment to Macquarie University in 2011, I have led research about the mechanisms that enable the refinement and development of capacities for resilience over time. At the School of Psychological Sciences, I lead the Resilience Research and Training Systems Team and am the current Director of the MQ Performance and Expertise Research Centre.   In my teaching role, I contribute to the organisational psychology program, specifically to units related to employee mental health, employee counselling, human resource management, and employee coaching.

I am an Associate Professor in Psychology at Macquarie University.  I gained my Masters and PhD in Psychology from Vanderbilt University in the USA. After completing my PhD, I did a post-doctoral research fellowship at Yale University. I then accepted a position as an Assistant Professor at Temple University in Philadelphia where I remained until I moved to Macquarie University in 2012. I currently serve as the Deputy Director of the University Centre of Elite Performance, Expertise, and Training (CEPET) and I am also a Deputy Director of the Faculty Perception and Action Research Centre (PARC).

I am a Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at Macquarie University and the Director of the Centre for Elite Performance Expertise and Training (CEPET) in Sydney, Australia. My research is directed towards modelling the dynamics of human perception, action, and cognition for the development of human-machine systems. I have expertise in cognitive science, human factors, complex systems, motor-control, perception-action, social and multiagent interaction and coordination, AI, deep-learning, virtual-reality, data analytics, and computation and dynamical modelling.

Associate Professor Tim Doyle is a biomechanics and physical performance researcher. He also holds an adjunct Associate Professor with the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research at Griffith University. He was previously employed as a human performance scientist by the Australian Department of Defence, with published research covering military performance, injury screening, and employment standards. He is an accredited Professional Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and an accredited level 2 Sport Scientist, and Exercise Scientist with Exercise and Sport Science Australia. His professional and academic collaborations extend both locally and internationally, including professional sports (Rugby Union and League), and Military and Law Enforcement agencies. He completed his PhD in Biomechanics through Edith Cowan University and before this he completed his Master of Science at Ball State University, and his undergraduate studies at the University of Queensland, Bachelor of Science (Human Movement Studies) - Honours. In addition to project grant funding he has been awarded an Endeavour Executive Fellowship which provided the opportunity to spend time at The Mayo Clinic and Stanford University. His research involves neuromuscular biomechanics, injury prevention, and physical preparation in athletes and tactical populations.

My research focuses primarily on two different aspects of sensory processing: the mechanisms and influences of selective attention, and the way in which the brain integrates information, including unusual occurrences of integration such as Synaesthesia. My research explores the way in which selective attention works. I am particularly interested in the way the brain maintains the delicate balance between voluntary deployments of attention towards a goal and the involuntary shifts of attention caused by events in the environment. My attention work focuses in three main domains: the cognitive processes underpinning visual search, in both abstract displays and within more applied displays such as medical images; sustained attention and the challenges involved in maintaining vigilance; and the neural underpinnings of attention. I am exploring these aspects of visual attention using psychophysics and neuroimaging. I am also interested in the way in which the brain changes and adapts to injury or modified input. My second major stream of research focuses on multisensory integration, including research on synaesthesia, an unusual condition in which stimulation in one sensory modality generates an additional experience. For example, in 'sound-colour' synaesthesia, a sound elicits a colour experience; in 'grapheme-colour' synaesthesia, letters, digits and words each generate particular involuntary colours. Although unusual, synaesthesia is not a disorder; it can provide us with a unique view of the integration that underlies perception. We are currently conducting studies on mirror-touch, grapheme-colour, sound-colour, and olfactory-colour synaesthesia. As always, I am happy to hear from people who think they might have synaesthesia - check out our Synaesthesia Research page for more information.
