Become a lymphoedema practitioner

Learn from leading experts, gaining a qualification recognised by the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA).

Our program incorporates the two mandatory foundational units and regional unit/s which health professionals select in line with their scope of practice.

Foundation units (mandatory):

  • Principles of Lymphoedema Management
  • Contemporary Evidence in Lymphoedema Management

Regional units:

  • Lymphoedema Practice for the Upper Limb and Breast
  • Lymphoedema Practice for the Lower Limb and Genital Region
  • Lymphoedema Practice for the Head and Neck Region

Accreditation

This training program is accredited by the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) in accordance with the ALA Competency Standards for Lymphoedema Practitioners and meets the application requirements for the ALA Accredited Lymphoedema Practitioner Program.

Program details

  • Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level 7 bachelor's qualification in a health degree or recognised equivalent.
  • Current registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or international equivalent.
  • Successfully complete the online foundational units prior to attending the face-to-face practical learning and assessment (regional unit/s).

This program has been designed to be interactive and multimodal enhancing your learning experience. It includes:

  • learning activities
  • embedded readings
  • knowledge checks
  • skills videos
  • forum activities.

At the successful completion of this training program you will be an accredited lymphoedema practitioner and you will be able to:

  • explain the revised anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and teachings from ICG lymphography
  • describe the prospective surveillance and early intervention model of care in cancer rehabilitation and explain how this can be integrated into healthcare settings
  • apply the latest evidence to develop a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan for a person at risk of or living with lymphoedema and chronic oedemas
  • discuss individual and societal impact of lymphoedema and chronic oedema models of care
  • demonstrate knowledge of scientific literature and evidence based best practice for the assessment and management of lymphoedema (as applicable to the regional unit)
  • demonstrate safe and effective, patient-centred skills and competencies in delivering high quality assessment and management strategies for treating lymphoedema (as applicable to the regional unit)
  • demonstrate effective communication skills in the context of patient-centred care and engagement with members of multidisciplinary teams
  • adapt assessment and intervention plans to meet needs of individuals from distinct social and/or cultural groups to ensure culturally respectful care for people with lymphoedema (as applicable to the regional unit)
  • use feedback from teachers, clinicians, peers and patients to inform self-evaluation and critical reflection of knowledge and skill development.

Each unit is $1100 plus GST. Fees must be paid in Australian dollars by credit card or by invoice on request to alerteducation@mq.edu.au.

Arrival tea/coffee, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are included in the cost. Advise of any dietary requirements when you complete the registration survey.

How to register
  1. Click on the registration link for the session that suits you.
  2. Pay the deposit of $2200 plus GST, which covers the two foundational units. The balance for each regional unit selected is $1100 plus GST which is due one month prior to the commencement of the face-to-face practical learning and assessment days.
  3. Once we have received the payment, you will receive a registration survey email. When completing the registration, have your current AHPRA Certificate ready to upload.
  4. Once we have received the completed registration survey, you will receive your official registration letter and your ProLearn login instructions to commence the online learning.

A cancellation refund will not be considered if a student has already commenced their online learning and assessment or is within three weeks of the start date of the face-to-face practical learning and assessment days.

If a student wishes to transfer to another session, they will incur a transfer fee of $250 plus GST. This transfer fee will be waived if a student can produce a medical certificate and/or suitable evidence of adverse circumstances.

In the case where minimum numbers are not reached, the ALERT Centre reserve the right to cancel a training program six weeks prior to the delivery of the face-to-face practical learning and assessment component. Students will then be offered alternate dates.

The face-to-face practical learning and assessment sessions were exceptional. The educators were fantastic, highly engaging and knowledgeable. This course has exceeded all my expectations.
