For outstanding PhD students currently studying digital finance topics in finance, law and/or computer science.

About the scholarship

Digital finance is a technological toolkit incorporating blockchain technology and other digital distributed ledgers that transforms real-world assets into digital tokens that can be traded seamlessly and securely across borders, time zones, asset classes and individuals. It will open new markets, and make existing markets more functional, less costly and more efficient, and has the potential to create a more inclusive and fair financial system.

Our top-up scholarships are available to students researching any of the following disciplines:

  • applied finance (eg Automated Market Makers, pricing, estimating gains from tokenisation)
  • law (eg compliance, regulation, legislation, policy implications of the digital finance transformation and smart contracts)
  • computer and data science (eg blockchain, digital distributed ledgers, market manipulation and fraud detection, security, data management, machine learning, LLM).

Bring the perspective of your academic discipline to any of the following focus areas that we believe will deliver significant economic impact:

  • Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)
  • impact investing and sustainable finance
  • mining and minerals markets.

Availability

The scholarship is available to currently enrolled PhD students who meet the following criteria:

  • full-time
  • have secured a primary scholarship for their PhD program from the University or government.
  • may be part way through their PhD studies
  • research aligns with DFCRC’s mission and strategic areas of research
  • demonstrates academic excellence and research potential in the field of digital finance.

Components

The scholarship comprises an additional $15,000 per annum on top of the student’s primary scholarship, renewable annually for up to three years subject to satisfactory research progress.
