This research asks: What does ‘doing diversity’ do, and how can it be done differently?
We specifically want to explore the experiences of:
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and other culturally and racially marginalised workers
- LGBTIQA+ workers (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer, asexual and other sexual and/or gender diverse people)
- disabled workers
- those whose identities cross these categories.
About the scholarship
The scholarship is connected to an Australian Research Council funded project that aims to answer the following questions:
- How are Australian and comparable international news media workplaces responding to their ‘diversity problem’?
- What institutional policies, frameworks and approaches for understanding ‘diversity’ exist in news media organisations in Australia and comparable western contexts? How do these inform organisational diversity initiatives and practices in Australia, how are they understood by those charged with implementing them, and what are their effects?
- How are the everyday norms and structures of news media organisations experienced and theorised by diverse news media workers and how far do diversity models work to ameliorate, change and/or uphold these?
- How do diverse news media workers respond to diversity initiatives, and to experiences of marginalisation and discrimination, and develop strategies and resources for mutual and self-care in their workplaces?
We seek candidates who are interested in a PhD project that aligns with these questions.
