AI and creativity: Legal and ethical issues
This scholarship is for a PhD candidate with a law, philosophy or related background. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team to investigate the legal, ethical, philosophical and workplace implications of Generative AI in creative industries.

About the scholarship
The project investigates three key areas:
- ethical and philosophical issues around AI creativity, authenticity, and authorship
- legal challenges including copyright and compensation
- impacts on creative work processes and worker experiences.
The successful candidate will develop a project that fits within one of these key areas. The candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team including experts in law, philosophy, and organisational behaviour, but they can focus their research on any one of these disciplines.
Potential research topics could include:
- legal frameworks for fair compensation of creative workers
- ethical and legal implications of training AI on copyrighted creative works
- philosophical questions around AI and its impacts on creativity, authenticity, and authorship
- impact of AI tools on creative work processes and professional identity in creative industries.
Candidates are expected to develop a project within the broad scope of the grant. We are particularly interested in candidates with a legal background, but candidates able to explore any of the above topics are encouraged to apply.
Availability
This scholarship is available to eligible candidates to undertake a direct entry three-year PhD program.
The minimum requirement for admission to a PhD degree is one of the following:
- completion of a Master of Research (MRes) with a grade of at least a Distinction level (75 per cent or greater)
- a Master of Philosophy
- a two-year masters degree with a major research component at Distinction level (75 per cent or greater).
Domestic applicants who do not meet these requirements may be eligible for entry via the Master of Research.
International applications also need to meet English language proficiency requirements.
Components
The scholarship comprises:
- a tuition fee offset/scholarship
- a living allowance stipend.
The value of each stipend scholarship is $38,500 per annum (full time, indexed) for three years.
