Safe handling of hazardous chemicals
Some chemicals used on the University campus, including specialised scientific substances, may present hazards to individuals, property and/or the environment. We restrict the procurement, use and disposal of these chemicals.
Our chemical safety measures include:
- keeping a detailed inventory of all chemicals on campus
- notifying regulatory bodies of dangerous goods including hazardous chemicals
- using ChemAlert to obtain safety information on chemicals and print labels for containers
- requiring staff and students who handle chemicals to:
- complete an induction on hazardous chemical safety
- carry out safety assessments before using a chemical
- know about the procedures in case of a spill or incident
- collecting chemical waste in properly labelled containers and disposing of them at a dedicated waste compound.
