Aim

DAAD Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme provides financial support for travel and living expenses to support collaborative research between Australia and Germany.

Researchers must be working on a genuinely collaborative research project with German partners, not furthering their individual research in Germany (or vice versa). The scheme usually involves a two-way exchange of researchers between Australia and Germany.

The Australian and German collaborators must submit one application each by the submission deadline: Australian researchers apply to their respective universities through the Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme, and the German project partners submitting an application to DAAD’s PPP Australia Programme.

Projects must include early career researchers (ECRs) as a significant focus of the scheme is to develop their experience and capacity. Projects that do not involve an ECR will not be considered for funding.

Applications will be assessed and ranked by a Macquarie Assessment Panel prior to submission to Universities Australia. Following the internal submission, applications will be assessed and ranked by an internal panel at Macquarie University. The scores generated from this internal assessment and the applications will be submitted by the Grant Development Team to Universities Australia, who will then provide the applications to DAAD for the final application assessment.

Applicants will be notified of the outcomes of the selection process in November 2025.

Macquarie University will provide funding up to AUD $25,000 (AUD $12,500 p.a.) for projects over 2 years. This funding is to support living and travel expenses for Macquarie researchers to spend time at partner institutions in Germany.

For funding commencing in 2026
  • Universities Australia announce the scheme is open: Wednesday 2 April 2025
  • Submission deadline via PUREThursday, 12 June 2025 by 5pm

Submissions will only be accepted via the PURE Research Management System and applications must have progressed through Department and Faculty approvals by the submission deadline.
