Macquarie’s Alumni Reunion Day: A heartwarming display of generosity and support

On 10 August 2024, the spirit of giving was in full force as Macquarie University's alumni and friends gathered for Alumni Reunion Day.
The event not only celebrated the university's 60th anniversary but also showcased the powerful bond between past and future generations of students. Central to the day's activities was our alumni connecting with each other and reconnecting with the campus and reminiscing about their time here. Alongside this we showcased the #60for60 campaign, which inspired alumni to donate towards scholarships, enabling students who are struggling to get an access to education and succeed.
Celebrating 60 Years
The call to action was simple yet impactful: to commemorate 60 years of academic excellence, take 60 seconds, donate $60, and help transform students’ lives. Throughout the day, the #MQ60for60 stand was a point of activity, with alumni stopping by to collect their special alumni cap and contribute to this meaningful cause.
“Education is fundamental and life changing,” said Hedda Paisley, Executive Director, Philanthropy & Alumni Relations. “Many of our students are embarking on a journey of discovery. For some it is very daunting. They face barriers that seem impossible to break down. By supporting scholarships, our alumni are helping to connect them to opportunities and be the best they can be.”
The past inspiring the future - messages to future students
Alumni shared words of wisdom and encouragement for future students, which were displayed on a giant screen, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
One inspiring message was from alumni and staff member Dr Jo Rey (PhD 2019). “Warami Hello! Lifelong learning can never be a mistake. Step by step… walanga-muru follow your path. In Dharug language we say yanamawa budyari gumada, which means walking together in good spirit.”
If you would like to leave your own message to future students, you can do so here.
Other messages from the day included:
- “Hey my future alumni. You are in the driver seat for your future, sounds cliched, but dream big now and you are to the power of us! Best of luck!”
- “Always say yes to a good opportunity, you will figure it all out later!”
- “Your network is as valuable as your knowledge. Invest in both, and the returns will last a lifetime.”
- “Grasp every opportunity as it comes. A radiant aura will take you far. Community is everything.”
- “Work smart, play hard, enjoy every single moment here.”
- “Embrace every opportunity, stay curious and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Macquarie is where you start shaping your future.”
A heartfelt address from a scholarship recipient
Scholarship recipient and law student Jade Bunt delivered a moving address to the alumni audience, sharing how scholarships have profoundly impacted her life. Her story deeply resonated with the audience, highlighting the difference that alumni contributions make to many lives.

Following her speech, Jade spent time at the #MQ60for60 stand, where she chatted with alumni, (including Tony Alizzi (PDMgmt 1994) pictured above, who was visiting from Singapore); expressed her gratitude and shared her experiences. Her presence was a powerful reminder of the tangible impact of scholarship and the importance of continued alumni support.
A vibrant celebration of community
A standout feature of the event was a striking backdrop, adorned with a collage of memorable moments from the past 60 years. Alumni were pleasantly surprised to spot their own or friends' photos, along with those of scholarship recipients they had supported over the years. This colourful display became a focal point for photos and a meaningful highlight, capturing the essence of the community’s shared experiences and connections.

The #MQ60for60 stand proved to be particularly popular, attracted not only donors but also future alumni eager to experience a taste of their parents’ or grandparents’ alma mater. The day was a wonderful blend of nostalgia, celebration, and forward-looking generosity, ensuring that the legacy of Macquarie University will continue to thrive for many years to come.
A huge thank you to all who donated towards our 60for60 appeal to support student scholarships. Please donate here if you would like to contribute.
