Cultivating Macquarie innovations for global impact
Macquarie Commercialisation is a dedicated team for intellectual property management and research commercialisation (or technology transfer) at Macquarie University.
We work directly with Macquarie University researchers to bring ideas out of the lab into the world for commercial and social impact.
Macquarie University startups and spinouts
Macquarie University has a strong record of innovation performance.
Apate.ai leverages cutting-edge conversational AI to combat phone scams by diverting and engaging scammers with realistic victim chatbots. These AI-driven bots are specifically trained to prolong conversations, thereby extracting actionable, real-time intelligence on emerging scam campaigns. By integrating seamlessly with telecommunications networks, Apate disrupts the scammer's business model, reducing the effectiveness of their operations while providing enterprises and governments with detailed insights and reports on scam activities.
Through its innovative approach, Apate transforms scam defence from reactive to proactive. The platform not only blocks and diverts scam calls but also extracts rich intelligence from these interactions, analysing scammer tactics, targets, and narratives. This intelligence is then delivered through customizable dashboards, providing clients with valuable insights into scam trends, allowing them to respond swiftly and effectively. Apate's intelligence-driven approach not only protects users but also strengthens trust of customers in private and public organisations by making consumers' digital experience increasingly scam-free.

Established in 2001 as a spinoff from Macquarie University, MicroBioGen is a world-leading biotechnology company with global success in the development of industrial yeast biocatalysts.
MicroBioGen has developed a platform technology that enables us to upgrade the industrial capabilities of the world’s most utilised microorganism – Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This yeast underpins over US$1 trillion in products per year including biofuels, bread, wine, spirits, animal feed, biochemicals etc.
MicroBioGen is successfully partnered with the international biotech company Novozymes, and our yeast products – used for the Novozymes Innova series – are quickly becoming the global industry standard to produce a range of first-generation biofuels.
The Australian Federal Government awarded MicroBioGen with a $4 million grant through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to optimise a yeast for food and fuel production. MicroBioGen has won numerous awards, such as a Macquarie University Award for Commercial Innovation and an Australian Export Award.

ProHeme is a newly established spin-off company from Macquarie University, dedicated to identifying blood and body fluid biomarkers for various neurodegenerative disorders, focusing primarily on Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Our multidisciplinary team operates at the intersection of scientific innovation and medical expertise, unified by a shared purpose: to revolutionise MS diagnosis and prognosis.
Breakthrough invention
Introducing the world's first blood test for Multiple Sclerosis, our pioneering research addresses the significant diagnostic challenges of MS. The first test enables early detection, crucial for timely intervention, while the second accurately predicts disease progression, allowing for personalised treatment plans. Together, these tests aim to greatly improve diagnostic accuracy, enhance patient care, and offer renewed hope to millions affected by MS worldwide.
Electronic Field Notebooks (EFN) has revolutionised field research via Field mark, an offline-capable, customisable mobile field data collection app for collecting and managing field data.
Whether you're exploring a remote area, urban landscape, or other challenging environment, Fieldmark ensures that you can collect and manage research data your way, with unparalleled ease, even when offline, allowing you to concentrate on your research rather than your network connection.
