Macquarie’s impressive sporting tradition continues with Sport Scholar Lucy Glanville recently competing in the Sochi Winter Olympic Games. The biathlete and cross country skier secured her place in sporting history as only the third female Australian to compete in this event at the Olympics since Nagano 1998.
The biathlon consists of skiing and shooting components, with events conducted over 7.5km, 10km and 15kms.
Prior to winning her place on the 60-strong Australian team, which comprised a record 28 university athletes, Glanville had competed at the World Championships in 2012/13, the World Junior Championships in 2010 and 2013, the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Austria, and in the recent World University Games.
Glanville’s thirst for international sporting excellence was recognised when she was nominated for the Female Athlete of the Year Award at the Macquarie University Blues Awards in 2013 in recognition of her growing list of achievements.
While she finished out of medal contention at Sochi, the experience has given Glanville great foundations for continued success in the sporting arena, and is now looking to progress over the next four years before representing Australia again in Pyeongchang.
“I’m definitely looking to improve over the next few years,” Glanville said at the end of the tough Women’s 15km Individual Biathlon in 78th position.
“Four misses in the shooting wasn’t too bad but I know I can improve that over the coming years.”
Sporting pride
The Macquarie University Sporting Hall of Fame’s current exhibition, ‘Our Sporting Pride – 1989-1999’ explores the experiences of a selection of athletes and clubs that epitomised 90′s sporting achievements at Macquarie. The exhibition recognises that it is these same achievements and contributions that have shaped sport and recreation into what exists today.
The exhibition features nine sporting alumni, discussing their sporting achievements and the recognition of receiving a Full Blues Award during the 1989-1999 era.
In addition, the exhibition pays tribute to the success of some of our long standing Sport Clubs including the Men’s Hockey Club, the Rugby Club, the Cricket Club and the Tennis Club. An outstanding array of memorabilia is also featured, including vintage sport uniforms and Annick Madden’s medals from the XIX Summer Universiade 1997 held in Sicily, Italy.
The exhibition will be on display until October 2014 and alumni, sports club members, staff, students, fellow athletes and the local community are all invited to come and connect with Macquarie’s sporting heritage.
