Collecting unique information to offer valuable data
The Business Outlook Scenarios Survey (BOSS) is a novel longitudinal study involving 500 financial decision-makers from small, medium, and large Australian businesses.
The BOSS survey collects unique information on forward-looking business views about the macroeconomic environment and their own key decisions. We collect, analyse and communicate these business views to inform the broader community.
About the survey
Conducted monthly, the survey tracks businesses’ perspectives and perceptions of uncertainty, offering valuable data for academic research, economic policy discussions, and providing insights into the challenges faced by Australian businesses.
A key feature of the BOSS Survey is its use of a scenario-based approach, which not only captures businesses’ expectations but also measures their underlying perceptions of uncertainty. The survey collects information on businesses’ expectations and uncertainty regarding the following key indicators:
- CPI Inflation rate
- Interest rate
- Costs
- Wages
- Prices of own products and services
- Revenue
- Employment
The BOSS survey seeks to build a national data infrastructure that enables real-time collection of unique business data to inform academic and policy research.
We aim to:
- Collect data on business expectations and perceptions of uncertainty.
- Analyse the formations of business expectations and perceptions, and their link with actual business decisions
- Inform the research community, policymakers and the broader public about the insights from the BOSS survey.
