A message from the Executive Dean

Dear alumni, partners and friends,

As we approach the middle of the year, I wanted to update you on what has been happening at Macquarie Business School (MQBS) recently.

Placing exceptional MQBS talent inside forward-thinking organisations
In May, we hosted the inaugural Industry Partnership Employability Summit to address the challenges organisations are facing around identifying skills gaps and diversity in key hiring areas. We have been working with industry to establish a strong talent pipeline, introducing organisations to the brightest students from MQBS through paid undergraduate traineeships and internships, research scholarships and sponsored prizes – we call this our Industry Partnership Program. You can read a summary of the Summit on our website.

This Summit will be an annual event working specifically with strategic partners who are contributing to our Industry Partnership Program, allowing them to get first access to our best students and talent insights.

Macquarie grows its publications in world-class FT50 and UT Dallas journals
Our research continues to go from strength to strength, with numerous publications in leading international journals as ranked by the well-known Business School FT50 and UC Dallas journal lists. We also look forward to hosting several outstanding researchers at Macquarie University in the next six months under our Visiting International Scholar Award program, including from the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Columbia University and University of Chicago.

Macquarie Business School and its academics have also been winning accolades internationally. In the recent 2024 University of Nebraska-Lincoln Global Research Rankings of Actuarial Science and Risk Management and Insurance we ranked third in the world for actuarial science publications in the leading journals over the last five years. While, Marketing Lecturer Dr Darren Kim is part of a team awarded the prestigious 2023 Shelby D.Hunt/ Harold H. Maynard Award from the American Marketing Association for the most significant article published in the Journal of Marketing (FT50 and ABDC A*) last year.

You can read more about how our research is changing communities in the stories below.

Shaping the future of the accounting profession
We are reviewing our accounting programs this year to ensure we are shaping the future of that profession and giving graduates a boost into business. In March, we hosted 40 industry experts at our Accounting Business Roundtable event, and it was clear that the future of accounting will require deeper intersection with data analytics, business advisory, forensic accounting and audit, ethics and sustainability, and accounting technology.

We are confident our course changes will put Macquarie Business School accounting graduates ahead of the pack in the job market.

Get involved in an upcoming event
Before I sign off, there are a few key events for your diary…

The Dean’s Excellence Awards is coming up on Monday 8 July. The event celebrates our top academic achievers. Our theme is ‘Thriving Teams’ and we will hear from our guest speakers, former Sydney FC player Alex Brosque and current Sydney FC player Jada Mathyssen-Whyman. We look forward to celebrating with our industry partners at the event.

Our MBA and Master of Applied Finance alumni should look out for their invite to the next networking event titled ‘Insights into Instability: Preparing for the Next Financial Crisis’. Scheduled for Wednesday 17 July, this event will discuss the various risks to financial stability and how best to prepare for them with advice from those who have led through these crises in recent times.

We also have an inspiring event on Women Leadership in Accounting and Finance on Thursday 1 August that will feature two dynamic panel discussions on themes including strategies for transforming women leadership in Australia amidst disruption, and the challenges, opportunities and solutions for women's advancement in the workplace. We invite you to come along and hear from our panels of prominent leaders across various industries.

Lastly, nominations are open up to midnight on Monday 1 July for the Sydney Awards hosted by the Committee for Sydney in partnership with MQBS. The awards celebrate the changemakers and emerging leaders of Sydney, and winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Thursday 12 September at Crown Sydney.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support, participation and advocacy for Macquarie Business School and its students and graduates. Please get in touch with our Engagement Team if you are interested in finding out more about upcoming events, our Industry Partnership Program and ways to partner with us. You can also follow us on LinkedIn for the latest news from MQBS.

Best regards,
Eric Knight
