Celebrating Success in 2021

While the world endured a second year in a row like no other, the Macquarie Business School was working hard to build success like never before.

Macquarie Business School attained some world rankings to celebrate, achieved some excellent staff wins and announced new and exciting partnerships. Here is a snapshot into the year that was 2021 for Macquarie Business School.

COURSE RANKINGS

The Australian’s Research Magazine
Macquarie University has been named as the top research institution in the field of Accounting and Taxation, by the Australian’s 2021 Research Magazine. This ranking is based on the number of citations for papers published in the top 20 journals in the field over the past five years.

2022 QS World University Rankings Success
The Master of Marketing and Master of Applied Finance programs have been ranked number 1 in Australia in the 2022 QS World University Rankings. Macquarie Business School is now also ranked in the Top 20 institutions globally for its Master of Marketing; Top 50 for Master of Management and Master of Applied Finance; and in the Top 100 for Master of Business Analytics and the Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Master of Business Administration
The MBA has been ranked equal 84th in the 2022 Global MBA ranking, placing it #4 in Australia, improving our position from 95th in 2021 and cementing our place in the Top 100 MBAs globally.

Master of Applied Finance
For the second year our Master of Applied Finance program is #1 in Australia and ranked 32nd globally in the QS Business Masters Ranking: Finance 2022. The Master of Applied Finance program ranked #6 for Value for Money placing it amongst the top Finance programs globally.

Master of Management
The Master of Management ranked equal 46th globally and #2 in Australia in the QS Business Masters Ranking: Management 2022. This is an improved position from 2021 and strengthens our place in the Top 50 Master of Management programs globally.

Master of Marketing
The Master of Marketing program has again been ranked in the Top 20 globally and #1 in Australia placing in 19th position in the QS Masters Business Ranking: Marketing 2022. Our program also placed #9 globally for ‘Value for Money’, reinforcing its place in one of best postgraduate marketing programs globally.

Master of Business Analytics
For the first time our Master of Business Analytics program has ranked in the QS Masters Business Ranking: Business Analytics 2022. Our program ranked equal 55th globally and #2 in Australia; an amazing achievement a program launched in 2020.

STAFF ACHIEVEMENTS

Macquarie Business School has an outstanding record for providing exceptional teaching standards. We thank our wonderful staff for another year of achievements that saw many go above and beyond and be recognised for their work. Here are just a few key highlights from 2021:

Tom Smith, Head of the Department of Applied Finance, was elected as one of 38 new Fellows of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. Tom was also named as a Fellow and Life Member of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) as well as being awarded AFFANZ’s Outstanding Contribution to Education Award.

Rahat Munir’s project Re-imagining employability: employability best practice in higher education institutions’ was shortlisted for the Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Award, in the Nurturing Employability Award category.

The Learning and Teaching team from Macquarie Business School was also shortlisted for the Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Award in the Nurturing Employability Award category. Co-led by Shazia K Jan and Paul Somers from conception through to this exciting stage.

Fourteen academics from Macquarie Business School, have been listed in the top 1 and 2 per cent of researchers worldwide, according to a recently released study from Stanford University: Riza Casidy, Francesco Chirico, Johannes Dumay, James Guthrie, Martina Linnenluecke, Ruth Neumann, Aron O'Cass, Alison Pullen, Grant Richardson, David Throsby, Masud Behnia, Professor Jana Bowden, Laura Le Luo and Deborah Schofield.


2021 Academic Staff Awards

A total ofsix Macquarie Business School representatives were finalists for the Learning and Teaching Awards 2021, and four finalists for the Research Excellence Awards. Congratulations to all shortlisted candidates, with particular mention to our five award winners:

Recognises our outstanding Higher Degree Research (HDR) supervisors who enable our HDR candidates to achieve their highest potential.

Excellence in Research - Five Future-Shaping Research Priorities
Recognises excellence in scholarly research, the creation, and application of research outcomes, the discovery of new knowledge or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way to generate new concepts, methodologies and understanding (One award per priority).

PARTNERSHIPS

Building on Macquarie University’s strong history of collaboration, the Business School has seen a number of new partnerships and accreditations announced in 2021, in addition to some strong results for existing agreements.

Articulation agreement with Sichuan Agricultural University (SAU)
Endorsed by the Education Department of the province, SAU and Macquarie University entered a strategic partnership in 2020 to build a 2+2 articulation arrangement. This 2+2 model allows selected Chinese students to study two years in China and two years in Australia. Upon successful completion, they will be awarded two Bachelor degrees, one from both host universities.

The Australian Financial Markets Association (AFMA) partnership
Offering our Financial Markets Certificate: 40 participants have successfully completed the four-unit program. The certificate offers pathways to our Graduate Certificate of Finance and Master of Applied Finance and provides opportunities to expand the relationship with AFMA into research and additional topic areas, while deepening industry connections with AFMA member firms.

Optus in Data
Optus Digital Badges Issued in 2021 for Cohorts 1 & 2 (to date) – Cohort 3 currently in progress Total of 125 badges issued to date. As a key partner for Optus, Macquarie Business School and the Faculty of Science and Engineering have developed and delivered a range of bespoke, micro-credential programs for Optus employees in the fields of Data and Analytics, Data Science and Strategic CX.

Association of Corporate Treasurers (ACT) Accreditation
ACT Accreditation status provides an opportunity for an organisation to enhance its profile and credentials by partnering with the leading global, and only Chartered, professional body for treasury and to be promoted through the ACT’s main website. Accreditation will provide MQBS students and graduates with improved access to ACT’s professional treasury qualifications.

Australian Corporate Treasury Association (ACTA) Partnership
The Australian Corporate Treasury Association (ACTA) is the peak professional body in Australia for corporate treasurers and senior financial risk managers. Their members consist primarily of senior managers from the top 300 corporations. A newly-signed partnership with ACTA will see Macquarie Business School providing online modules to people new to corporate treasury and to more experienced practitioners who want to build their skills and knowledge in particular topics. Completion of all parts of the Certificate in Corporate Treasury will also offer pathways to our Graduate Certificate of Finance and Master of Applied Finance.

Association of MBAs (AMBA) Accreditation
MQBS officially received accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA) in 2021, one of the world’s leading authorities on post-graduate business education, demonstrating its continuing commitment to excellence in management education. Upon receiving AMBA accreditation, all current MBA students and recent MBA alumni of Macquarie Business School are invited to join AMBA’s global member community of more than 57,000 students and alumni in more than 150 countries on a free basis, for networking, thought leadership, career development, and a variety of benefits.
