2023: A year in review

As we approach the end of 2023, the Executive Dean reflects on the School's research, education and connection, and provides a preview of 2024.

Wally's Walk in Autumn

A message from the Executive Dean

Dear colleagues,

2023 has been a busy and productive year at Macquarie Business School, and it consolidates the remarkable acceleration toward excellence underway at the School.

Research
There has been growing global recognition of the School’s research accomplishments. In the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, our rankings have risen consistently over the last four years based on annualised research outputs and we are now in the global top 150 in all business-related areas and in the global top 20 in Business Administration.

This coincides with a 50 per cent increase in the number of FT50 journal publications per academic since 2020 (our FT50 journal publications in 2023 to date can be viewed here), our ascent to global top 150 in the Times Higher Education Business and Economics ranking, and our top 100 global ranking in QS Accounting and Finance. We are also delighted that 13 MQBS academics have been recognised among the world's top two per cent of most cited academics for 2022 and that we are ranked Australia’s #1 institution in Accounting and Taxation.

Employment
In Education, we have been collecting new measures of excellence for MQBS. We currently hold the #1 position in the Sydney basin for the Undergraduate Business and Management field in the 2022 National Student Experience Survey, and our Master of Marketing ranked #1 in the QS Business Masters ranking – we ranked #2 for all other QS Business Master degrees.

In addition, we recently shared an independent report, which compared Australia’s top business schools across various measures using a large, longitudinal sample of publicly available online professional profile data. The analysis, which was conducted by economics consulting firm Mandala and commissioned by MQBS, revealed that 13 per cent of MQBS masters graduates and 12 per cent of the school’s bachelor graduates are hired by a top-tier employer within six months of graduating. Reflected as a total number, this places MQBS second for undergraduate and third for postgraduate among the country’s top business schools. This further assures our position as a Top 3 business school in Australia.

This coincides with a time when the School is launching a refreshed Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Business for 2024, which we will report on more next year. For now, we continue to be proud of the incredible achievements of our students in making a big difference to the community.

External connection
Finally, Macquarie Business School strives to be a place where business topics are discussed. In September, I hosted Dr Martin Parkinson AC PSM, Macquarie University Chancellor, and Professor Jennifer Westacott AO, former Chief Executive of the Business Council of Australia, and Western Sydney University Chancellor for a discussion on the Government’s response to the Migration Review. We also hosted various events this year delving into key issues facing the business community, including the energy transition, modern slavery, trends in digital marketing and AI in Finance.

Your support, participation and advocacy for Macquarie Business School and its graduates makes a world of difference to our School and University. Please get in touch if you have ideas or commitments of support you want to make via our engagement team or by following us on LinkedIn

As always, our genuine thanks to you all for your ongoing support and we look forward to keeping connected.

Best regards,
Eric Knight
