Galle Fort
One of the major features of Galle fort, on the landward side, is the
height and extreme thickness of the rampart walls. The centrally-located
Moon Bastion has a depth of 400 feet and would have been almost
impossible to breach. Deep within this section of the wall is a large
rectangular powder magazine. The greatest danger from an attacking force
would have been from the use of mortars rather than cannons. These
high-trajectory explosive bombs could inflict severe destruction and
casualties inside the walls.
