Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania)
The name given to Tasmania by its European discoverer Abel Tasman in 1642, in honor of the governor of the Dutch East Indies, Anthony Van Diemen (1593 - 1645). The name was officially changed to Tasmania on 17 December 1855 - to help distinguish the colony from its earlier history as a penal settlement. [Also referred to in some early historical writings as 'Van Dieman's Land'].

Vellore (South India)
Town and fort sitauted 129km (80 miles) west from Madras (Chennai) and approx. 24km (15 miles) west from Arcot. After the fall of Seringapatam in 1799 Tipu's family were detained here. The subsequent mutiny at Vellore in 1806 was attributed to them, but it was more likely due to the orders of Sir John Cradock prohibiting the wearing of caste marks and beards. Tipu's family was exiled to Calcutta.
