URMSTON, James (1750-1815)
of Rath House and of Chigwell House, Essex, J.P. and High Sheriff of Essex in 1806. Prior to this time Urmston served in the Royal Navy and HEIC; in 1777 he married Elizabeth Lawrence (d. 1824), daughter of George Lawrence, R.N., Secretary to Admiral Byng. Children: five sons and two daughters. Urmston was the Captain of the HEIC Sir Edward Hughes Indiaman for 5 voyages between Britain and India. Macquarie travelled as a passenger from Tellicherry to Bombay in January 1798, and from Bombay to Britain on Urmston's final voyage in 1803 - disembarking on 7 May 1803 at Brighthelmstone (Brighton), Sussex. Macquarie visited James and Elizabeth Urmston at Chigwell House in December 1804 and January 1805.
