Thursday 1. Augt. 1816 ! Mr. Broughton the Asst. Comy. Genl. proceeds a Passenger in the Kangaroo to relieve and supersede Mr. Depy. Asst. Comy. Genl. Hogan at the Derwent. By the Kangaroo I have sent Fifty Male Convicts to Port Dalrymple and an equal number to the Derwent, in both which numbers are included a large Proportion of useful Artificers for each of the Settlements. — I have also sent Dewall the Hostile Black Native – for some time past confined in Sydney Jail – to Port Dalrymple – whither I have transported him for Seven Years, for being implicated in several of the late murders & Depredations committed by the Native Blacks on the White Inhabitants. Monday 5. Augt. 1816 ! This morning also the Ship Frederick, Commanded by Capt. Williams, saild [sic] from the Heads direct for Bengal. I wrote some Letters by this last ship for England & India, enclosing them under cover to the Post Master General at Calcutta. — L. M.
Wedy. 7. Augt. 1816 !!! Immediately on receiving this unfortunate intelligence, I ordered the Brig Nautilus of Bengal to be hired and sent down to Newcastle forthwith, in Company with the Lady Nelson, for the purpose of raising the new Brig, and save her if possible; and these two Vessels were accordingly dispatched for Newcastle between the Hours of 5 and 6,O'Clock this Evening, with Mr. Cozar the Master Builder and Six smart Seamen to assist in raising the new Brig. — From the day of the Elizabeth Henrietta's leaving this on the 21st. Ulto. till She got into the Coal River, She had experienced constant Gales of Wind and tempestuous Weather, and was driven about 100 miles to the Northward of Port Stephens; escaping very narrowly being lost at Sea. — L. Thursday 15. Augt. 1816 ! L. M. This forenoon between 11 and 12,O'Clock the Colonial Sloop Hawkesbury Packet, arrived in the Harbour from Newcastle, which she left on the Evening of Tuesday the 13th. Instant, bringing a Dispatch from Capt. Wallis the Commandant of that Settlement, containing the agreeeable and pleasant intelligence of the safety of the New Brig Elizabeth Henrietta; and that She had been raised on that very same Day in the forenoon through the means afforded by the Govt. Brig Lady Nelson and Bengal Brig Nautilus – both of which had arrived at the Coal River on the morning of the 9th. Instant. — The Rigging however of the New Brig having been greatly injured, as well as her Masts & Yards, in consequence of her upsetting, it will take some time to make her fit for Sea again; but her Hull is not in the least damaged. Saturday 17. Augt. 1816 ! L. M. I also drew a Draft of this day's date on the Police Fund, in favor of Qr. Mr. Macdonald of the 46th. Regt. for £31.17.5 Str., being the amount of 85 Pairs of Shoes at 7/6 Pr. Pair, given as Donations on the part of Government to the Soldiers belonging to Capts. Schaw & Wallis and Lt. Dawe's Detachments sent out first in pursuit of the Hostile Natives. — L. M.

Saturday 24. Augt. 1816 ! I drew a Draft of this day's date on the Police Fund for £37. – Sterling, in favor of Messrs. Cureton & Dwyer, in full of the Balance due to them on their Contract for erecting a Stone Reservoir and Pump adjoining to the Fountain in Bent Street – for the use of the Inhabitants – the amount of said Work having originally £61.10. Str., of which £30. Str. was advanced in part payment on 31st. Jany. last. — A sum of £5.10. Str. for other work by the same men for Govt. was included in the above Draft for £37. –.– Str. —

Thursday 29. Augt. 1816 !!! L. M. The Conduct of Mr. Wm. Sutton, Storekeeper in the Commissariat Department at Sydney, having been for some time past highly irregular and negligent, principally occasioned owing to his unfortunate propensity to Drunkenness, and it having been intimated to him that he could no longer be allowed to retain his Situation, he has given in his Resignation to the Dy. Comy. Genl. and I have approved of the same being accepted. — But in consideration of his advanced age and long Services, I have this day promised to grant him the Privileges of a Free Settler, by giving him a Grant of 200 acres of Land, & Victualling himself & Family for 18 months. — L.
