Sunday 25th. Octr. 1812 ! — Recd. several Public Dispatches and a number of Private Letters from our Relations & Friends with good accounts of them, excepting that Nephew Capt. Hugh Maclaine has had his Leg shot off in the Storm of Ciuad [sic] Rodrigo in Portugal – but is likely to live & do well after it. I received at the same time Official Notification of my being appointed Brigadr. Genl. on the Staff of N.S.Wales, from the 25th. of Novr. 1811 ! — Accounts were received by this oppy. of the dreadful & horrid assassination of the Rt. Honble. Perceval the Prime Minister of England in the Lobby of the House of Commons by John Bellingham on the 11th. of May 1812 !!!
Saty. 31. Octr. 1812 ! This day Thirty Six Years I landed and joined the British Army in America as a Volunteer, and this day did Duty for the first time as Brigadier General on the Staff. —
