Letter

To Sir James Henry Craig,
10 January 1804

No. 6. Stafford Street, Dover Street,
London 10th. Jany. 1804.

Sir,
Observing by last Saturday's Gazette that
you have succeeded the late General Grinfield as Colonel
of the 86th. Regiment, I beg leave to offer you my sincere
congratulations on that event. —

Having been in command of the 86th. Regiment
for the last six months previous to my leaving India,
I conceive it my duty to transmit you herewith,
for your information, a Copy of the last Monthly
Return of it I signed about a fortnight before the Regt.
Embarked at Bombay for Brodera in the Guzeratt,
where it has been ever since stationed. — I also do
myself the honor to enclose you a List of the officers
of the Regiment, as they stand at present, to the best
of my knowledge and information. —

I was compelled to relinquish the command
of the Regiment, and to leave India much sooner than
I intended in consequence of extreme bad health. —
I sailed from Bombay on the 6th. of Jany. 1803, and
arrived in England in May last. — I was soon afterwards
appointed Asst. Adjt. Genl. of the London District, which
Situation I still hold. —

When the 86th. were sent from
Bombay to the Guzeratt in Novr. 1802, they were very
strong and generally healthy; but they became very
Sickly soon after their arrival there, and I understand
have lost a great number of men since. — I left
Brevet Major Cuyler in command of the Regiment,
but Major Torrens joined it soon afterwards, and
now commands it. —

Lieut. Colonel Lloyd has been
at Home nearly for two years past and is now living
some where in Wales. — Our second Lt. Colonel
Major Genl. Dowdeswell, went out to Madras in Lord
William Bentick's Family last Spring; — but of course
from his present Rank, never can join the Regiment.

Any further information you may wish for
respecting the 86th. Regiment, in my power to give, I will
be at all times happy to afford you. —

I have the honor to be most respectfully
Sir,
Your most obedt. & most faithful
humble Servant

L. Macquarie Lt. Col:
Major 86th. Regt.

[To]
Lt. General
Sir Jas. Hy. Craig K.B.
Colonel 86th. Regt.
Colchester. —
