July 6.
I had the pleasure this day, of receiving by way of Madras and Bombay, a
letter from my much esteemed Friend, Christopher Lundin Esqr. of
Auchtermerny in Scotland, giving me pleasing accounts of himself and
many of my Friends at home, – I am inform'd of his having
succeeded to the Estate of Auchtermerny, by the demise of worthy Mrs.
Lundin Heiress of that place; and also, that my very amiable friend,
Miss Maclean Heiress of Torloisk, was married to Captain Clephane of the
Guards, Laird of Kirkness and Carslogie, in Fifeshire, a very
respectable Match; of which I am very happy on her account – as
she is a most deserving and amiable Girl; and for whom I have always had
a very sincere regard. —
July 12.
I received a letter per the Madras Post, from Mrs. Coggan at Bombay,,
respecting an English Version of the famous Scots Pastoral 'The Gentle
Shepherd' lately Published by a sister of hers in London, Some Copies of
which Mrs. Coggan is to send me soon to dispose of amongst my Military
Friends here.
July 20.
A General Court Martial sat at Tellicherry, of which Major Hay Macdowall
73d. Regiment was President, for the trial of Lieut. John Brown of H.M.
77th. Regiment; brought to a Court Martial by the Officers of the
Regiment; 'For Conduct at different times unbecoming the character of an
Officer and a Gentleman.' — The principal cause of bringing this
officer to a Court-Martial, was, for not having, in a proper manner,
resented a publick insult he received in company from a Brother officer,
Lieut. Mc.Crea. —
