Jany. 5.
Capt. Oakes with his Detachment and about Five
Hundred Prisoners taken at Barrygurry and Cottipore, arrived in Camp
after performing the Service he was sent upon. —
Jany. 6. I wrote letters of this
date, to my Uncle Lochbuy, Genl. Maclean,
Torloisk, Chr. Lundin Esqr. and Lt. Col Small; to go per the Princess Royal Indiaman
to Europe, expected every hour from Bombay. —
Jany. 9.
The Princess Royal Indiaman sailed for England from Tellicherry Roads on
the Evening of this day. — Mrs. Sparks and several other Passengers
from Bombay went home in her to England. —
Jany. 11.
The Line changed Ground about half a mile to the Front. — The Vestal
Frigate, Sir Richard Strachan, arrived at Cananore from Madras; and
brings accounts that His Majesty's 73d. Highland Regiment is coming
round to form a Part of our Army on this Coast. —
Jany. 15.
I wrote letters of this date to Mr. Bruce, Mr. Henshaw & Lt. Hill 75th., to Bombay.
Jany. 18.
This being the anniversary of Her Majesty's Birth Day, a Royal Salute
was fired from the Park of Artillery; and all the Field Officers and
Captains of the Line dined with the Commander in chief to celebrate the
Day. —
Jany. 19.
The First Division of His Majesty's 73d.
Regiment arrived at Cananore; – this Division is commanded by the
Honble. Capt. St. John; – they remained
at Cananore untill [sic] the 22d., when they
Encamped on the left of our Lines. —
Jany. 28.
The army moved forward and Encamped this day on a very pleasant Ground
at Biliapatam, about Six Miles north from Cananore, in the following
order vizt. — The Line of Encampment Fronted towards the Ghauts – the
Rear to the Sea – flank'd on the left by the River of Biliapatam, and on
the Right by a valley and Low Grounds. — The Forts of Avery, Carley,
and several other smaller ones about and near Cananore, were blown up by
orders of the Commander in chief, some days previous to the army's
changing Ground to the Front. —
Jany. 31.
Lieut. Colonel Hartley with his Detachment
consisting of His Majesty's 75th. Highland
Regt., commanded by Captain Crawford; the
1st. or Grenadier Battn. of Sepoys, Commanded by Capt. Gore; the 7th. Battn. of
Sepoys Commanded by Capt. Mignon; and a Company
of Artillery with Lascars, commanded by Capt.
Lawman, and about One Thousand (Horse and Foot) Troops belonging to our
Ally the King of Travancore, commanded by his Prime Minister or
Dewanjee; arrived this Day in Camp from the Southward, to reinforce our
little Army, now a very respectable one – consisting of Six
Thousand Regular Troops, besides Allied Forces.
The following Arrangement of the Army took place on the arrival of Col.
Hartley's Detachment – vizt. – The
Right Brigade, consisted of the following Corps, vizt.; the 73d. Highland Regt.;
77th. Regt.; 2d,
Battn. N. Infantry; & 10th. Battn. N. Infantry;
under the Command of Lt. Col. James Balfour:

The Left Brigade, consisted of the 1st. Bombay
European Regt., the 3d., 7th. and 12th.

Commanded by Capt. Crawford; the 1st., or Grenadier Battn., Commanded by
Capt. Gore, and the Flank Battalion, Commanded by Capt. James Dunlop of
H.M. 77th. Regt., under the Command of Lieut. Colonel Hartley; Major
Dow, Second in Command; Lieut. Woodington, Major of Brigade.
