Friday. I received Letters from Bombay from my Agents there – and
Answered them on the 2d. Inst. —
Apl. 3.
I went out early this morning with a Foraging Party of 160 Men about
five Miles in Front, for Straw for the Tents. —
Apl. 4.
The accounts of the taking of the Fort and Garrison of Bangalore by the
Grand Army under Earl Cornwallis was announced to us this day at
4'OClock in the Afternoon by a Royal Salute from the Park of Artillery;
it was taken by assault on the Night of the 21st. of March. —
Apl. 6.
The Right Wing of the 73d. Regiment commanded by Capt. Barbutt, arrived
in Camp this morning. — The 2d. Battn. Native Infantry commanded by
Capt. Burchall came also up the Ghaut, and encamped on the right of the
77th. Regt.
Apl. 10.
It rained very heavy the greatest part of this night – our poor men got
all wet, their Tents being very bad. —
Apl. 14.
Captain Whitelocke being for some time past indisposed, went off to
Tellicherry for the benefit if his Health this Evening.
Apl. 17.
Sunday. I took a walk to the top of a Hill, near our Encampment, along
with Brigade Major Erskine and was most agreeably surprised with the
finest view and most extensive prospect I ever beheld: the day being
clearer than usual, we saw distinctly the Sea, and the Towns of
Tellicherry and Cannanore; also the Shipping in the offing; which from
the summit of the Hill we stood upon, in a direct line, must be at least
Fifty Miles from us; and with the help of a fine Glass, belonging to
Capt. Reynolds, we could see a great deal farther. —
Apl. 20.
The Accounts of the surrender of the strong Fortress of Darwar, by
Capitulation, was announced this Evening by the discharge of Twenty one
Pieces of Cannon from the Park of Artillery; this place has stood out a
very long Siege, and a number of valuable Officers and Men have been
killed and wounded at the different attacks; it fell to the lot of Major
Sartorious to command the Detachment of the Bombay Troops, when this
place surrendered to the combined Forces of the Mahrattas and the
East-India-Company. —
Apl. 21.
Lieut. Hoy of the Corps of Artillery was killed in a Duel with Ensign
Stateham [sic] of the 73d. Regt. —
Apl. 23.
Saturday. His Majesty's 75th.
Highland Regiment, marched down the
Ghauts, this morning, to embark at Cannanore for Bombay.
Apl. 24.
Sunday. I was down the Ghauts this morning with a Party for Provisions.
Apl. 27.
Wednesday. Ensign Statham, and the two seconds vizt., Lieut. White 73d.
& Lieut. Fancourt 77th. went off this day, by order of the Commander in
chief, in arrest to Bombay, to stand their Trial at the Quarter Sessions
there, on account of the Death of Lieut. Hoy,
in the late Duel they were
concerned in: they were put under the charge of Capt. Geo. Mackenzie &
Lieut. Halket 75th.

& Co. enclosing a Bill
of Exchange for Five Thousand Rupees, and sent my letter by Capt.
Mackenzie. —
