February
Feby. 11.
Thursday. — I read an English Newspaper of the 10th. Septr. 1789,
which came lately overland; and which I had the pleasure to see the long
Promotions in the Four King's New Regiments in this Country, made by
Earl Cornwallis in February last, Gazetted at the War Office under date
of 8th. Septr. 1789, and consequently approved by His Majesty. —
Feby. 26.
Friday. The Honble. Commodore Cornwallis arrived this
day from Bengal in His Majesty's Ship Perseverance Capt. Smith; as soon as he arrived in the Harbour, he
removed his broad Pendant on board the Crown; and sent an Officer
on board of all the Company's Grabs and Cruizers to strike their
Pendants – a mortifying enough circumstance to the Honble. Company's Marine.
George Green Esqr. one of the Members of Council died
this morning after a few days illness, and was buried in the Evening
with Military Honours; – Our Regt. furnish'd
the Funeral Party consisting of a Lieut. Colonel, 3
Capts., 6 Subs, 12 Serjts. 12 Corpls. 6 Drumrs. and 300 Privates. —
We had a Play & Farce Performed by the Soldiers of the Regt. at the
Barracks, at which we had a number of Ladies and Gentlemen of Bombay –
and after the Play we gave them a Ball and Supper. —
All the accounts we hear from the other Coast still breathes of war with
Tippoo. —
