November
Novr. 5.
I wrote a long letter of this date to Major Genl. Sir Archd. Campbell Governor of Madras soliciting him to use
his interest with Lord Cornwallis in my favor for Promotion; – I was
very much encouraged to take this liberty with Sir Archibald, from the
very civil and friendly attention he was pleased to shew me when under
his command in the year 1783, in the Island of Jamaica, in the West
Indies, where he was then Governor and Commander in chief; I sent my
letter by Post. —
Our Regiment, as well as all the rest of the Troops in Garrison, and on
the Island, are kept hard at Drill and Exercise; we are out twice a day
regularly – at Five OClock in the morning, and at half after Four in the
Evening; Have frequent Brigade Field Days and Inspections by Colonel
Abercromby, in order to Prepare us for the Grand Review by Genl. Medows.

The North Britons, or Sons of St.
Andrews in Bombay, Gave this Evening a
very Elegant Ball and Supper to the Settlement – the Expence was paid
according to Rank. — it was Given at the Theatre and was very
handsomely conducted.
In the course of this month my Friend Capt.
Cameron was so obliging as to introduce me to the most Genteel and
Fashionable Circle of Acquaintance in Bombay – viz. General Nilson's
Family – Mr. Bruce's Family - Capt. Sparke's Family – Capt.
Kerr's and Mrs. Coggans Families: — from
all of whom I receive particular attention.
