John BUTCHER

Macquarie's reference to "Butcher" in his 1818 journal recording the trip to Newcastle is almost certainly to John Butcher who, "late of 73rd Regt.", received a land order in 1816 which was later confirmed in a grant of 40 acres near Penrith, parish of Londonderry, on 13 January 1818.

There is a record for a "John Butcher" enlisting in the 102nd Regiment (NSW Corps) on 11 May 1792 and arriving in the colony on the Boddingtons on 7 August 1793. He received a 25 acre land grant at Mulgrave Place on the Hawkesbury River in 1795, and on 24 April 1810 he transferred to the 73rd Regiment.
