The original manuscripts transcribed as part of the Journeys in Time 1809 -1822 project form part of the set of Macquarie Papers in forty-one folio volumes held by the Mitchell Library, Sydney. The call numbers of the ten volumes of journals of tours are A777 to A786; the journal of the voyage from Australia to England in 1822 is A775; and Elizabeth Macquarie's journal of the voyage from England to Australia is catalogued separately, and is held at C126.
The manuscripts are written in notebooks, some quarto-size, some octavo-size, and for one journal, 'Journal of a Tour to the Northern Settlements in Novr. 1821' [ML Ref: A785], six folio folded sheets have been used as well as an octavo-size notebook. Each leaf or, where folded sheets occur, one side of a folded sheet, has been inset on paper. Existing covers, cover sheets and blank leaves have been mounted in their original order.
It should be noted that the manuscripts are paged in various ways. Macquarie numbered the pages in some cases, sometimes incorrectly, and other numbers in pencil have been added. The folio numbers used in this description do not always correspond with the pencil numbers on the manuscripts.
Elizabeth Macquarie's Journal 1809.
Full leather binding (rebound with original covers) and the remains of a broken metal clasp. Page size: 19.5 x 12 cm. ff.1 -104. Text begins: 'Journal' with text following. All ff. double-sided except f.104.
There are 39 additional blank pages (with an incomplete pencil sketch on the final page]. Pages appear to have been closely trimmed or cropped in rebinding. Faint traces of ruled lines can be detected on some diary pages.

In one quarto-size notebook with marbled paper cover mounted at beginning, no longer in original binding: page size, 20 x 16 cm. On cover is written: 'Journal to and from/Van Diemen's Land/1811./1811' /repeated at base of cover. f.1 recto begins title as above with text following. Verso of f.43 blank. All ff. single except ff.42-43.

Tour to the New Discovered/Country in April 1815.
In two octavo-size notebooks without covers. When the Mitchell Librarian, Mr. Hugh Wright, first inspected the Macquarie Papers in London in December 1913 he described these notebooks as "two pocket memo books." From this description one would expect to find covers of some sort. However the remark may have been simply to denote that there were two octavo notebooks for this journal instead of one quarto notebook as for each of the earlier journals.
Page size, 18 x 11.5 cm. On f.1 recto, 'List of the names of the/Gentlemen who accompanied /Govr. & Mrs. Macquarie on the/Tour to the New discovered/Country in April 1815:/

In two octavo-size notebooks. The front cover of the first, reddish brown limp morocco, has been preserved: page size, 18 x 11.5 cm.. On cover: 'Journal/No. 1/Octr. & Novr./ 1820' ff.47, page size, 18 x 11.5 cm. f.1 recto bears title as above, verso blank, f.23 verso blank. The second part (ff.24) recto begins: 'Monday 23 Octr. 1820 Continued!/I was rather disappointed/in not finding Commissioner Bigge/ . . . etc..'It appears therefore that the first notebook contained ff.23 and the second ff.24. Some blanks may have been lost. Single leaves throughout.
