Palace Square

The central square in St Petersburg where the city's main street Nevsky Prospect meets the Neva River and the Palace Embankment.

The Palace Square (Dvortsovaya Ploshchad) is overlooked by the Winter Palace, the former General Staff Building, and the Admiralty. The square is dominated by the 47.5m Alexander Column designed by Montferrand in 1834 to commemorate the 1812 victory over Napoleon - named after Tsar Alexander 1.
