Kunstkamera or Kunstkammer
Baroque-style museum on Vasilevskiy Island. Located along the Neva embankment, directly opposite to the Admiralty Building. The Kunstkammer ('Art Chamber') was St Petersburg's first museum. Designed by Georg Matternoviy and constructed in the period 1718-1734 to exhibit Peter the Great's infamous collection of anatomical specimens. Today the Kunstkamera houses the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography.
