Developing with silicon-based technologies

The Silicon Platforms Lab (SiP Lab) focuses on the development of advanced hardware platforms using silicon-based technologies. The SiP Lab is a collaboration with our industry partner Atto Devices. We work on technologies for earth and space.

Integrated circuits (ICs) are the building blocks for all advanced technology. ICs have applications in space, biotechnology, communications, sensors and compute. The SiP Lab is an applied research lab with a focus on training students and developing novel IC designs with real-world applications.

Our team consists of Industry veterans including Neil Weste, David Skellern and Mike Boers as well as leading academic researchers including Jafar Shojaii.

Research Focus

The SiP Lab undertakes research into the following areas:

Rad hard design for defence and space – design of integrated circuits and hardware platforms to resist nuclear radiation, space radiation, intentional electromagnetic attacks.

Silicon for next generation communications – research into next generation 5G/6G systems, architecture and efficient design techniques in nanometre silicon – x10 faster hardware design.

Software defined radios – scientific instruments to support test, quantum and AI applications.

Biotechnology – development of integrated circuits to support biotechnology applications.
