An ongoing culture of improvement

In the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, we strive to create a collegial and diverse community that is inclusive and respectful.

We are proud to have applied for a bronze Pleiades Award, which recognises our workplace as showing an active and sustained commitment to building an equitable, inclusive and diverse workplace at all levels of study and employment.

Our aim is to be an inclusive, diverse and equitable community of work and research. We are committed to removing conscious and unconscious biases and to establishing sustainable practices that create measurable positive change.

Equity, diversity and inclusion committee

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences maintains an active gender-balanced equity, diversity and inclusion committee who meet at least five times in the year. Members include academic, research and professional staff, and both higher degree research and undergraduate students.

Workplace Culture Statement

This Workplace Culture statement builds on the Workplace Culture statement that was formally adopted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy in late 2017.

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences pays respect to the Wallumattagal people of the Dharug Nation, custodians of the land on which Macquarie University resides, and of the ancient scientific and cultural knowledge that arose on country. We pay respect to all First Nation Australians within our school community.

We embrace Macquarie University's commitment to principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, as being vital to an impactful and successful university.

We strive to be welcoming and supportive of all staff and students regardless of gender or sexual identity; cultural, linguistic or socio-economic background; disability; age; family/carer responsibilities; neurodiversity; political affiliation; or religious belief.

This commitment underlies our approach to all aspects of our work in teaching, research, and service, and to ensuring a positive workplace experience, including in recruitment, mentoring, professional advancement, and celebration of success. These commitments extend to all School members, staff, students, and visitors, regardless of the nature or duration of their affiliation with the School.

We commit to an ongoing culture of improvement, measuring and reflecting on our progress, actively pursuing internal feedback and external assessment, and promoting these values within our School, in the University, and in our wider academic community.

Our Workplace Culture statement was formally adopted in February 2023.
