Actively championing women in engineering

Macquarie University is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment where women can thrive in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM).

As a proud participant in the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE) pilot program, we are dedicated to advancing the promotion, hiring, participation, and retention of women in these fields. We actively ensure that our female students are informed about scholarships, internships, awards, and networking opportunities designed to support and empower them in their academic and professional journeys.

Women in Engineering Committee

At the School of Engineering, we are committed to breaking barriers and building a future where gender does not define opportunities in engineering. Our Women in Engineering (WIE) Committee plays a pivotal role in fostering an inclusive culture and increasing female representation in STEM.

The committee – led by Dr. Bandita Mainali, Director of the Women in Engineering Committee – comprises academics, staff, and students who work collaboratively to:

  • expand professional networks by creating meaningful connections between female engineering students, industry professionals, and mentors
  • advocate for diversity and equity by addressing challenges faced by women in engineering and fostering an inclusive learning environment
  • raise awareness and provide training on unconscious bias, equipping academics, tutors, and students with strategies to actively counteract bias in STEM fields
  • amplify our impact and create greater opportunities for women in engineering by collaborating with national and global Women in STEM organisations, including:
    • IEEE Women in Engineering (IEEE WIE)
    • IEEE Women in Nanotechnology (IEEE WIN)
    • Engineers Australia Women in Engineering (EA WIE)
    • Science and Technology Australia (Superstars of STEM).

Through these initiatives, we are not just supporting women in engineering – we are actively reshaping the landscape to ensure a future where every aspiring female engineer has the resources, mentorship, and opportunities to succeed.
