In his MRes and PhD, Saleh investigated the potential of methoprene (a juvenile hormone analogue) and caffeine as pre-release dietary supplements for fruit fly sterile insect technique programs. Both treatments greatly accelerated reproductive development, increasing the proportion of released males that mature and contribute to the management program and prospectively biasing operational sex ratio of released flies in favour of males due to sex differences in response to these supplements.
