Applying for Macquarie MD

The Macquarie MD is designed for students with:

  • a high level of achievement in tertiary study
  • who engage in a variety of experiences and activities
  • have the interpersonal skills desirable in a medical student and doctor
  • have the resilience, commitment and desire to help improve the health of Australian and global communities.

Before you apply

Before applying to the Macquarie MD, ensure you understand what’s required of you, what pathways and adjustment factors are involved, and what criteria you’ll be judged on.

  • Read and understand the minimum entry requirements.
  • Consider your preparedness and capacity to attend the compulsory international clinical placements.
  • Review all policy and compliance requirements (below).
  • Check the Adjustment Factor Scheme and Indigenous Australian Pathway (below), if applicable.
  • Read the Macquarie MD admission guide that applies to you. These guides contain specific information on the selection criteria and minimum admissions requirements for the MD.

Note: Prerequisites in human anatomy and human physiology are no longer required for admission, however, these are areas of assumed knowledge for commencing students.

The Macquarie MD course has a number of specific policies and requirements to support students, to ensure the quality of their experience, and to maintain the standards of the Australian Medical Council.

Inherent requirements

Review the Health Course Requirements module carefully before applying. All Macquarie MD students are expected to have read and understood all requirements listed and explained in the module before commencing the course.

Our course inherent requirements have been developed with reference to the Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand Inherent Requirements Guideline.

The following applicants will automatically receive a three per cent adjustment to their weighted GPA:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians (domestic applicants)
  • rural (domestic applicants)
  • Macquarie University Bachelor of Clinical Science graduates (domestic and international applicants).

If applicants belong to two or more of the above categories, a maximum five per cent adjustment will be applied to the weighted GPA.

Entry is competitive. GPA and GAMSAT/MCAT scores of successful candidates selected for interview are likely to be significantly higher than the minimum entry requirements.

Ranking and selection of applicants for interview is based on:

  • 50 per cent GPA
  • 50 per cent GAMSAT/MCAT.

Ranking and selection of applicants for an offer is based on:

  • 50 per cent GPA/WAM
  • 50 per cent Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).

Application pathways are in place to assist your application.

Indigenous Australian pathway

Through the Indigenous Australian Pathway your application will be individually assessed by the faculty and staff at Walanga Muru, the University's Indigenous office.

  • You will automatically receive a three per cent adjustment to your weighted GPA.
  • Submission of GAMSAT results is optional.
  • You will receive guidance during the application and interview process.
  • You will need to achieve a minimum weighted GPA of 5.0 out of 7.0.
Undergraduate pathways

Application process

Applicants should follow the below steps.

Submit your application online within the allotted time frame. Important admissions dates are listed later on this page.

Domestic applicants

Submit your application via Graduate Entry Medical Schools Admissions Centre (GEMSAS). Ensure that you have carefully read the GEMSAS Medicine Admissions Guide prior to submission.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can apply through the standard domestic pathway or the Indigenous Australian Pathway.

International applicants

Submit your application directly to International Admissions at Macquarie University, ensuring you complete and upload the compulsory Supplementary Form as part of your online application. Ensure that you have carefully read the Macquarie MD International Admissions Guide 2024 before commencing your application.

Interviews are by invitation only. If you are selected for an interview, you will need to attend and perform a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).

Domestic applicants

All domestic applicants residing in Australia must be available to attend an interview on Saturday 28 September 2024. These interviews will be conducted face-to-face.

International applicants

International applicants must be available during June, August and October. Interviews will be conducted in three rounds via Zoom or a similar platform.

Successful applicants will be made offers, with some offers being conditional. Final results need to be checked and offer conditions met by applicants.

Offers need to be accepted or declined online as instructed (if applicable). After accepting your offer, you need to meet health course requirements before enrolment.

Once accepted, successful applicants are sent the Macquarie MD welcome email with detailed information, including:

  • instructions for enrolment
  • timetable information.
Deferrals

An offer of a place is made for a specified year only. Deferral of offers is not granted. Applicants who do not want or are unable to accept their offer of a place must reapply if they wish to be considered for the following year.

Program transfer

Students commencing a medical program at any Australian or New Zealand medical school are expected to complete their program at their chosen university. Transfer of enrolment between medical programs is not normally approved.
