Global and future-focused study

The Macquarie University Doctor of Medicine (Macquarie MD) is integrated within the University and MQ Health, uniting transformative learning with patient-centred clinical care, teaching and research.

Our course has been designed to enrich well-established approaches in medical education with current and emerging innovations. The four-year graduate entry course:

  • integrates applied medical sciences with clinical sciences, professionalism, research and cultural responsiveness
  • teaches students in an environment where learning is fully integrated with outstanding patient-centred clinical care and active health and medical research
  • provides students with a quality-assured international education
  • is accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and approved by the Medical Board of Australia (MBA).

A distinctly different approach

We work to prepare our graduates for the predicted environments in which they will practice as future leaders who are:

  • patient-centred
  • safety-focused
  • culturally responsive
  • globally aware
  • equipped to work within increasingly digital health systems.

We do this through:

We teach students in an environment where learning is fully integrated with outstanding patient-centred clinical care and active health and medical research. This environment is MQ Health – Australia’s first university-led and operated teaching hospital and academic health sciences centre.

MQ Health nurtures the life cycle of aspiring and developing doctors. Underpinned by its core purpose – Heal. Learn. Discover. – it provides a fertile ground for medical education, research and training, with the full ecosystem of students, doctors and health professionals of varying levels of experience being trained, taught and mentored by active clinicians.

Students will learn in a number of Australian and international environments, with a meaningful focus on interprofessional, comparative and digital learning in the medical context.

The course aims to graduate culturally responsive, engaged, globally aware medical professionals who:

  • understand the health systems they work within
  • have respect for, and sensitivity towards, the cultural needs of diverse populations, including Indigenous Australians
  • are aware of the impact of their own culture and values on their medical practice.

The course focuses on patient safety and quality – an approach that is embedded across the course and has been developed in collaboration with Macquarie University’s research powerhouse, the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI).

Supported by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, the AIHI conducts world-class research to improve healthcare services and systems locally and globally.

The Macquarie MD has been designed with a global focus, with structured international clinical experiences embedded throughout the course.

Extended international experiences are optimised through online communities of practice across the globe to provide comparative learning opportunities, allowing you to:

  • apply public health thinking
  • develop cultural responsiveness and resilience by immersing yourself in diverse environments and health systems
  • discuss unique presentations and diseases, broadening your knowledge by learning about clinical cases that may be rare in Australia
  • learn how to be an effective, contributing member of different health systems, cultures and clinical presentations
  • learn in a quality-assured and supportive environment.

Your comparative learning experience will help you understand how healthcare is delivered through the lens of different cultures and health systems. Most of all, you’ll be preparing yourself to be a doctor equipped to improve the health of our multicultural Australian community as well as the broader global community.

International experience in medicine has been an essential part of my career and progression as a doctor. The more the world globalises, the more value it will bring to future generations of doctors and to patient care.
