Striving to understand and improve communication

Our academics and researchers endeavour to understand human speech production and reception, and language processing and acquisition, across the lifespan.

The Department of Linguistics spans a wide range of disciplines within the broader areas of theoretical and applied linguistics.

We are well known nationally and internationally for our cutting-edge research in the fields of:

  • audiology and hearing
  • adult language learning
  • child language acquisition
  • Indigenous languages
  • language processing
  • professional communication.

We also contribute substantially to translational research in collaboration with major industry partners.
