Exploring Daoism's role in modern China
Professor Livia Kohn's lecture discussed Daoism's influence on modern Chinese society, health, well-being, and environmental awareness.

As part of the School of International Studies Lecture Series, Professor Emerita Livia Kohn from Boston University delivered a lecture on Wednesday 2 April 2025, at the Moot Court.
A leading expert in Daoist philosophy, meditation, and self-cultivation practices, Professor Kohn explored the role of Daoism in contemporary Chinese society. She discussed its impact on health, well-being, state narratives, environmental awareness, and the government's strict regulation of organised Daoist practices. The lecture also examined how meditation, body cultivation, and rituals continue to shape Daoist traditions today.
Understanding Daoism and Chinese philosophy is more relevant than ever in today's world. As we navigate pressing global challenges – health and well-being, environmental sustainability, and political change – Daoist thought offers profound wisdom on living in harmony with nature, cultivating both body and mind, and maintaining the balance between the individual and society, as well as humanity and the natural world.
Professor Kohn's insights were particularly valuable given her extensive research background and her work as the executive editor of the Journal of Daoist Studies. In addition to her academic contributions, she is an active practitioner of Taiji (Tai Chi), Qigong, Kripalu Yoga, and Vipassana meditation.
Following the lecture, students and staff had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session moderated by Associate Professor Shirley Chan, delving deeper into Daoism's philosophical and practical dimensions.
The School of International Studies Lecture Series is designed to foster engagement between staff, students, and distinguished scholars on pressing global issues. This initiative forms part of a broader effort to facilitate meaningful conversations with alumni, external experts, and the wider academic community.
Stay tuned for future events in the series.
