The first steps on your special education journey

The Macquarie University Special Education Centre School is open to enrolment for primary school age — between Kindergarten and Year 6 — students with an eligible disability.

In order to be eligible to attend MUSEC School, students must have a diagnosis of one or more of the following:

  • a language disability
  • a mild to moderate intellectual disability
  • autism.

Parents seeking enrolment for their child must:

  1. Check the eligibility criteria. Students with disabilities satisfying the criteria will be considered for admission to MUSEC School.
  2. Complete our application form and attach the relevant documentation. Documents to be emailed to the Registrar, MUSEC School, musec.registrar@mq.edu.au.

Application information

All applications for a place at MUSEC School are considered as vacancies arise, and during Term 3 for vacancies in the following school year.

Once we have received an application, it is deemed to be ‘active’ until or unless you notify MUSEC otherwise.

Parents seeking enrolment for their child must:

  • Check the eligibility criteria.
  • The school will arrange a meeting with the Principal and school tour conducted.
  • An application form is completed and submitted to the School Principal. All applications for a place at MUSEC School are considered as vacancies arise, and during Term 3 for vacancies the following school year.
  • Afterward, if appropriate, there will be a formal offer of a place made.
  • To accept an offer, the relevant disability documentations are submitted and one term’s fees as a deposit.

The fees for all students are $5500 per term ($22,000 per annum).

  • A deposit of $5500 is required on acceptance of offer (to be deducted from fees for the student’s last term of enrolment at the school).
  • Fees plus any additional charges (for excursions, sports program etc) are payable at the beginning of each term.
  • Fees remain one term in advance until formal written notice to leave the school is given.
  • One term’s notice to leave the school is required. Fees will apply where no formal notice has been received.

Frequently asked questions

Visit our School life page for information on MUSEC School term dates and school hours.

Each year we typically have some children who move on to mainstream, or return to mainstream, after spending one to two years at MUSEC. This is determined by parents’ wishes.

We support transition to a child’s next school setting and are always available to discuss openly and honestly our professional view on a child’s educational needs.

Because MUSEC has a focus on literacy and numeracy, students do need to have some language. Some children do not use language to a large extent but they do, nonetheless, have some receptive and expressive language.

If a child is not yet using any form of language or communication, a school that can focus primarily on communication is likely to be a better fit than MUSEC.

Classroom skills and social skills are supported using a ‘positive behaviour’ approach that provides positive feedback and encouragement to students. Children usually respond very well to the praise and reward systems of the classrooms.

While some children may have displayed behaviour thought to be ‘challenging’ in a regular school setting, we find that in most instances such behaviour is reduced in our setting.

Our positive teaching approach makes expected behaviour very explicit. In most instances we find this sufficient to promote acceptable behaviour.

If there is a particular behaviour issue that needs more intensive intervention, we meet with parents to discuss how this can best be managed.

A range of children attend MUSEC School. Some are very social and actively involved in play with their peers, others need some support to join in games, and some prefer their own company.

We run structured play activities during some lunch breaks but also allow children to have some ‘downtime’.

No, there is no NDIS funding for education and schooling costs.

No, there is no catchment area. But if you are using the Assisted School Travel Program, travel time to or from school cannot exceed 90 minutes.
