The Protection of the Natural Environment in times of Armed Conflict: A few reflections in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine
The Centre for Environmental Law, Macquarie University hosted a special webinar on the Ukraine Crisis on Friday, 4 March from 1:00-2:00pm AEDT.
Dr Eve Massingham, Senior Research Fellow from the School of Law, University of Queensland spoke about “ The protection of the natural environment in times of armed conflict: a few reflections in light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine ”. The session was chaired by CEL Director A/Prof Nengye Liu.
Dr Massingham's expertise is the laws of armed conflict and the topic of her PhD concerned weapons law. She is the co-editor's of Ensuring Respect for International Humanitarian Law (Routledge, 2020) and has published book chapters and journal articles in this field.
Prior to joining the University of Queensland, Dr Massingham worked for the International Red Cross and Red Cross Movement for ten years, including as the International Committee of the Red Cross' Regional Legal Adviser for East Africa and as an International Humanitarian Law officer for Australian Red Cross. She is currently working on projects including on the topics of autonomous military platforms and ensuring respect for the environment during conflict.
