Create reading lists for your unit

Use Leganto to manage reading lists, comply with copyright and licensing requirements, and make readings easily accessible to students.

Unit readings support

Support is available to help you locate relevant resources for your unit, and make them readily accessible to your students. The Unit Readings team can advise on open educational resources, licensing, and access models. Access for some e-resources can be complex, contact the Unit Readings team or read more about how to maximise the availability of required readings.

Use Leganto within your iLearn unit to make reading lists available for your unit.

Reading list items can include:

Through Leganto you can request resources required for teaching that are not held by Waranara Library. You can also submit requests for digitisation of print resources.

Due to copyright and licence conditions, you must not upload readings directly into iLearn. Using Leganto ensures you meet and manage any copyright permissions for teaching material.

Learn more about creating, editing and managing your reading lists in our Leganto for conveners guide.

Waranara's Unit Readings team can provide expert advice to maximise the availability of required readings and assist in understanding the complexity of different publisher access models. Publishers may place barriers on access to some e-resources, including limiting the number of users who can access a resource at one time. This may impact where reading lists materials are intended for use in online exams and other assessment tasks.

To maximise access to required readings, the Unit Readings team provides advice regarding the use and availability of Open Education Resources (OER). These are freely accessible and openly licensed teaching and learning materials that students and teaching staff can reuse, share, revise and remix. OER provide an affordable alternative to traditional textbooks and assist in overcoming access barriers inherent in other electronic resources.

Waranara Library is committed to providing equitable access to required unit materials. Read more about our approach to accessibility and equity through online unit readings. An online approach provides wider access and has a number of benefits including:

  • addressing equity considerations ensuring students are not disadvantaged if they are unable to physically access a print Reserve collection.
  • responding to the needs of students who are enrolled as distance students as they are unable to easily access a print Reserve collection.
  • supporting modern forms of blended learning and study, making resources accessible wherever and whenever students study directly from iLearn.

Leganto allows you to identify prescribed textbooks for your unit. Add the ‘Required’ tag to these items, as they may require purchase for the collection, and ebook copies to be managed for high use.

Note: Turnaround times for new textbooks requests vary, so early advice on your unit resource requirements is appreciated.

We can help identify library resource requirements for new units, courses and specialisations.

Proposals for new units and courses include an assessment of library resource requirements as part of the workflow in our curriculum management system (MQCMS).

MQCMS provides a field to enter this assessment as part of the ‘Unit Overview and Viability’ stage.

The resource requirements assessment should include whether:

  • Waranara Library’s current collection of books, journal articles, and other information resources will support the scope and aims of the proposed unit or course
  • additional resources will be required, with particular consideration for identifying early whether any new databases or journals are required
  • there are any considerations to note around online access to resources for units taught online.

The Faculty Librarian for your department can assist you in assessing these resource requirements and helping you plan ahead for their role in the delivery of the unit or course.

In addition to ensuring that you will have the information resources to support the unit, consultation with your Faculty Librarian will ensure that you have identified Library and learning skills services available to you that support the information and digital literacy learning outcomes of the unit.
