See the Women at Macquarie exhibition in the Library's exhibition space. Celebrating and reflecting on 60 years of women at Macquarie University.
The Macquarie University Art Gallery has put together a special exhibition “Women at Macquarie’ in the Macquarie University Library Exhibition Space. The exhibition is part of the University’s 60th anniversary program.
The exhibition will be opened by Professor Michelle Arrow, a Macquarie historian with expertise in cultural history, the history of popular culture, and the history of the women's movement on Open Day, August 10 at 3pm.
Macquarie was established at a time of expanding education opportunities bringing more people, particularly women, into studying at university. Macquarie was the first university in Australia to establish it’s own child care facilities enabling women with young families to take up study.
The exhibition, curated by Annabel Daley and Andrew Simpson draws on historic material from the Macquarie University History Museum on the Women and Labour conferences of the 1990s, from 'Passing Show' on the Women's Room and student politics at MQ, the University Archives on Blue Stocking Week and the Institute of Early Childhood's Art Collection on the establishment of childcare, The exhibition also features material from the Women's Collective and the Sports Association.
We welcome and encourage Macquarie alumni to visit the exhibition. We are asking visitors to the exhibition to nominate a Macquarie University woman who has inspired them. You can nominate any inspirational Macquarie University woman by outlining their association with the university and what characteristics you found inspirational, all in no more than 60 words. The best 60 nominations will be part of further promotions of the university’s anniversary.
The exhibition also features a large archival picture (above) from the opening of the Women's Room in the old student union building, we're hoping that visitors may recognise some of the people in the image.
