Protection and restoration goals
Macquarie University is making a difference for the future of the land our campus sits within by setting aside and restoring spaces for nature.
The site of our campus in Sydney’s northern suburbs has a dynamic history of land use, including both agriculture and urbanisation in the recent past. Despite this, our campus still contains excellent examples of the local ecology, setting us apart from many other educational institutions.
Much of our attention is currently on various means of habitat restoration. Macquarie’s goals and activities relating to the natural environment include:
- bushland restoration and tree replenishment
- collaboration with Science, Planning and Indigenous studies in providing many outdoor learning opportunities
- opportunities for community engagement, such as volunteering in our bushcare program and on planting days
- rehabilitation of our urban creeks and improving their incoming storm water quality
- utilising the teaching gardens, planted and natural landscapes of the campus as an Arboretum, with feature walks open to the broader community.
