Investing in greater employment outcomes
Macquarie University’s commitment to Indigenous workforce development extends to all facets of our operations.
The vision of our inaugural Indigenous Workforce Plan 2018–2021 is to develop and implement a whole-of University long-term strategy. The Plan focuses on providing a culturally safe and inclusive university environment for all staff, including:
- the development of strategies for attracting quality applicants for academic and professional positions at all levels of the University
- an internal environment that promotes professional and personal growth for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff with strong community collaboration.
Training, research and Indigenous initiatives
The Manawari Cultural Safety Staff Training seeks to give all staff a meaningful understanding and respect for Aboriginal cultural values, histories, beliefs, practices, knowledges, and philosophies.
The training is underpinned by the Macquarie University Indigenous Strategy and Reconciliation Statement focusing on creating a better understanding of cultural values, knowledges and perspectives that will lead to greater engagement and social responsibility.
The training consists of three stages:
- Pre-workshop online modules
- Face-to-face workshop
- Survey/Evaluation
Once these stages are completed participants will receive a micro-credential from the University.
Macquarie University is committed to producing graduates who value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and knowledges and the importance of these in our nation’s history and future. The Mudang-Dali Indigenous Connected Curriculum Framework provides a centralised framework towards achieving a quality approach to the embedding of Indigenous values, philosophies, and knowledges into current and future curriculum. The Framework provides the opportunity to educate all Macquarie University students in the development of positive attitudes, knowledges, understandings, and skills that impact diversity, inclusiveness, and cultural contexts within global environments.

The Indigenous Research Plan is a further step forward towards our commitment to Indigenous communities, which includes producing the highest quality outcomes in all areas of teaching and research as well as the recruitment, retention and success of Indigenous students and staff.
The Centre for Global Indigenous Futures explores the complexities of Indigenous life, ingenuity, and identity to imagine futures in which Indigenous people are thriving. We consider Indigenous love, joy, intimacy, sexuality, identity, care, relationality, representation, and digital life and how these might emerge and evolve in the future. Global Indigenous research conducted through this Centre opens possibilities and opportunities for Indigenous futures.
