The new ‘Nostalgia and Nonsense: The art of Tango’ series at Macquarie University Art Gallery, and presented by Tángalo, has been specially curated to recreate the passion and flirtation of the tango visually, as well as audibly.

Tángalo will take audiences on a journey from the barrios of Buenos Aires to the concert-halls and nightclubs of high-society. Presented in elegant costumes, the exciting young ensemble showcases a signature mix of old and new music, blending the emotion of golden age tango with a contemporary aesthetic.

Tángalo’s formation was filled with a fierce desire to inspire and revitalise Australia’s tango dance culture. The brainchild of Emily-Rose Šarkova and Owen Salomé, Tángalo has made a concerted effort to engender a live music dance culture in Australia.

Since their debut performance of July 2011, Tángalo has rapidly become a favourite on the Australian Tango scene, performing for events such as The National Folk Festival, Made in Argentina Festival, Tango in the Spring and B.A.S.H. They have also performed in prestigious Sydney music venues such as The Basement, Blue Beat and created the very popular Tango evenings at the Camelot Lounge.

In 2013 Tángalo collaborated with Argentine Singer Fabian Rodriguez in a string of concerts and a tour along with dancers Quique Miller and Belen Siva. In 2014 Tángalo were the winners of the Infinite Song Contest at the National Folk Festival in Canberra, and are the recipients of a prestigious JUMP mentorship from the Australia Council for the Arts.
